LASAR Radio presenter Derek Walker marks the 75th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory in Japan Day) on his Cheddleton Chats show tomorrow (Aug 14).
"My Dad knew Bill Slim," recalls Derek, referring to Field Marshall Will (Bill) Joseph Slim.
Slim was one of the British Army's most decorated commanders and led the 14th Army - the so-called "forgotten army" - in the Burma campaign.
Field Marshal The Right Honourable The Viscount Slim KG, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, GBE, DSO, MC, KStJ, saw active service in both the First and Second World War and was wounded three times in action.
"He [Slim] wasn't popular but my Dad liked him a lot," said Derek.
A plaque is installed in the Viscount's memory in St Paul's Cathedral in London.
Derek will tell you more about this remarkable man on his show between 2pm - 4pm.
The 75th anniversary of VJ Day is this Saturday (Aug 15).
