WARWICKSHIRE all-rounder Alex Thomson (pictured) made a winning return to former club, Leek, in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire League Premier Division on Saturday.
Thomson plays for the Moorlanders whenever his duties with his first-class county allow and on this latest trip back to Highfield he was in sensational form.
His spin bowling returned excellent figures of 6-4 as Whitmore crashed to 99 all out.
Whitmore were looking good on 52-1 before Thomson's introduction to the Leek attack turned the game on its head.
Leek were expected to ease their way to a comfortable victory in reply, only for the weather to almost be their undoing.
The intervention of rain led to Leek being set a revised target of 94 off 34 overs, which they nervously achieved with the last pair at the crease, after Muhammad Usman (3-10) and Lee Johnson (3-12) had made life difficult for them.
Leek were indebted to Craig Melrose (28) and Ryan Ball (24) for their priceless contributions to their side's winning total of 94-9.
A victory was extremely important to Leek as defeat would have taken them perilously close to the foot of the table.
