CHEADLE suffered a batting collapse for the second week running in the NSSCL Premier Division today (Aug 22), on their way to a painful eight-wicket defeat at Whitmore.
After winning all four opening games to go top of the table, the Bassetts are in all sorts of trouble after tasting consecutive defeats.
Cheadle looked poised for a comfortable victory at home to Longton the previous weekend, before losing their last four batsmen without further scoring.
On this occasion it was Cheadle's top order batsmen who set the ball rolling to defeat with an inept performance at the crease.
Openers Tom Edwards and Craig Smith departed without scoring, and then Andy Coxon quickly followed with the visitors still to register a single run.
Jake Mills at last troubled the scorer with eight runs, before becoming the first of Zain Abbas' (5-15) victims, as Cheadle were reduced to an alarming 17-4.
All-rounder Matt Goodwin (17) dug in to the end as Cheadle's top scorer, before becoming the visitors the last man out and just 49 runs showing on the scoreboard.
Whitmore responded with 51-2 after being 1-1 and then 20-2, with James Sellers and Goodwin claiming a wicket each.
