The Baker Boys need to step up warns boss after cup struggle

LEEK Town kick off their season in the BetVictor Northern Premier League South East Division with a visit from Wisbech Town tomorrow (Saturday, September 19).

Blues boss Neil Baker is calling for an improvement from his team, after they struggled to overcome lower league opposition in the Emirates FA Cup last weekend.

Leek edged out Midland League Premier Division side Sporting Khalsa 2-1 with goals from Jack Wakefield and Matt Bell in their preliminary round tie.

Baker said: "I was pleased with the win but not the performance.

"A lot of the lads hadn't played 90 minutes in pre-season and maybe there were a few opening day nerves, so there are reasons but not excuses."

Blues beat their visitors from Cambridgeshire 4-0 in last season's corresponding fixture. Bell, Darren Chadwick, Rob Stevenson and Tim Grice were the scorers.

Baker has been able to retain the majority of the squad that saw Blues sitting pretty at the top of the table before Covid-19 intervened.

Tomorrow's game at Harrison Park kicks off at 3pm.
