Local cricket given the green light to emerge from lockdown

THE North Staffordshire and South Cheshire League is ready to swing into action now that recreational cricket has finally been granted leave from lockdown.

Boris Johnson has given the green light for recreational cricket to bowl ahead from next Saturday (July 11), but the NSSCL will be opening up the following week, having already made provision for a July 18 start date.

The PM said: "We do want to work as fast as possible to get cricket back and we will be publishing guidelines in the next few days to that cricket can resume in time for next weekend.

There will be some obvious amendments to ensure social distancing and to keep contact between players to a minimum, such as the need for cricketers to arrive at the ground in their kit ready to play, thus avoiding the changing room areas.

The NSSCL are proposing to split each of their nine divisions in to two to create mini A and B divisions, meaning 18 sections in total.

The six teams in each section would then play five Twenty20 matches and five longer format games. A finals day could then be held at the end of the summer to determine the champions of every division.

The NSSCL season was due to start on Saturday, April 18, before Covid-19 intervened causing sport in the UK to be suspended.
