Football: Young stopper Charlie is the Rocester fans' darling

TEENAGE goalkeeper Charlie Wood has capped a fine season between the posts for Rocester FC in the Midland League by emerging as the fans favourite. The 17-year-old claimed the Supporters Player of the Year Award with a healthy 48.3% of the votes, ahead of Jordan Godfrey (31.8%) and veteran skipper Carl Allen (19.9%). Fans were invited to nominate and vote for their favourite player on the Twitter website, spread over three rounds, which attracted a total of 1,190 votes. A total of 236 people took part in the final round of voting. Wood made 31 appearances for the Romans, as they climbed up the Division One table to ninth spot, before the season was cancelled by the FA because of the coronavirus pandemic. He kept four clean sheets. Wood has earned praise from club legend Richard Froggatt, who made 462 appearance in goal for Rocester, before retiring at the end of the 2016/17 season. 'Froggy' has joined the Rocester coaching staff at the invitation of manager Paul Wright. He said: "I'll sign as cover, but we've got a far better keeper in Charlie Wood than I ever was, so I'm not competing for the shirt, just hopefully offering advice when it is asked for." Veteran stopper Froggatt, 39, showed he had lost none of his goalkeeping skills when turning out in an emergency for the Romans against Hinckley in February. Speaking after learning he would be receiving the award, young Wood said: “I just want to say thank you to everyone who voted for me, and hopefully we’ll be back playing football soon.”
