Covid-19: Nearly 60,000 workers benefit from Government support

GOVERNMENT has been contributing to the wages of nearly 60,000 workers across North Staffordshire during lockdown.

A total of 57,600 workers have been furloughed since April through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS).

A total of 14,700 employees have benefited from the scheme in the Staffordshire Moorlands, with the highest number of claimants (31,000) in neighbouring Stoke-on-Trent and 14,000 in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The scheme was launched on April 20 and entitled employers to claim a cash grant to cover 80 per cent of a worker's wages, capped at £2,500 a month, while the employee remained off work because of lockdown.
