Covid-19: Dramatic rise in number of unemployment claimants

THE Covid-19 pandemic has seen a dramatic rise in the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in North Staffordshire.

Figures for May reveal almost 20,000 people across the district were receiving either Jobseeker's Allowance of Universal Credit.

There were 2,270 claimants in the Staffordshire Moorlands, 13,080 in Stoke-on-Trent and 4,155 in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Another 3,920 people were added to the area's claimant account in May after a rise of 5,325 in April.
