Blues step onto the FA Cup trail at home to Sporting Khalsa

LEEK Town will face Midland League Premier Division side Sporting Khalsa at home in the preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup next month.

The tie is scheduled for Saturday, September 12 and, subject to a successful phased return of spectators - following a Government easing of Covid-19 restrictions affecting sport - the Blues can look forward to vocal backing from their fans.

From August 31, Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston has announced clubs can welcome back spectators after playing behind closed doors, provided the number does not exceed 30 per cent of the minimum ground grading capacity.

If a club have any fixtures before August 30, they need play at least one pre-season or competitive match at the 15 per cent threshold, before moving on to the 30 per cent limit.

Spectators have been unable to attend matches played in the top 10 tiers of men’s football since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in March.

A recent nationwide online petition calling for fans to be allowed back into non-league grounds gained more than 10,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

Blues FA Cup opponents, Sporting Khalsa, are based in Willenhall and were the first British Asian club to own their own ground - the Aspray Arena - which they bought from Willenhall Town in 2010, after moving from Abbey Park, the former home of Bloxwich Town.
